SS - competitors

I've been looking into the competitors and influences Shaun has left with me to research. There is some good stuff and the majority of it is very minimal which is something Shaun is going for. The creative challenge with being minimal is saying a lot with not very much.

Jil Sanders.

Raf Simons.
Very interesting and avant gard website. His approach is quite impactive and unconventional as well as minimal. The design work incorporates concept videos and music as well as the collections.

ACNE.

Comme Des Garçons.
Very unusual website for this one. The navigation is difficult to understand and its not very user friendly. It's more of an art compilation and mood site than an actual exhibition of fashion. From my understanding of fashion and through discussions with Shaun and Paul Luke I've learnt that there is more to fashion design than just creating clothes and designing them. It's a lot about aesthetics and trends which are influenced from a number of different things world wide. Trends are also predicted and foreseen based on sociology, economics, ecology, politics and psychology.

Dover Street Market.
This website actually has all of Comme Des Garçons collections.

MONK - design by analogue

From my last conversation with Mannie a few bars in Leeds sprung to mind that were similar to what he was asking for.

I searched for Jake's Bar which is situated on Call Lane in Leeds city centre and it lead me to a few other bars, all of which have had their websites designed by Analogue.

PRODUCT//RANGE//DISTRIBUTION - Digital issues

I've gone over the digital copies of the issues that correspond to the 5 films that I'm illustrating with type to get an idea of what the magazine has already done. It's interesting as each magazine's aesthetic throughout is defined in some way by the feature film of that issue, so when looking through I found bits of type that illustrate the film much in the way that I intend to.

Black Swan Issue.

Drive Issue

Unfortunately only Drive and Black Swan have their own issues but it's useful to see what the magazine does and how they operate when focus on one film.

PRODUCT//RANGE//DISTRIBUTION - Design direction

I've been looking at illustrative type to get some inspiration for composition for my own designs. MOst of these examples are very decorative and I think they make good engaging designs but they wouln't function as actual typefaces. As I am aiming to produce several typefaces And use them in this way this is a big problem which I will need to solve.

This last one I find very interesting as It's manipulating and editing the type to create imagery. I hadn't thought about this as a possible outcome before but its made me think about investigating this sort of design approach as well.
